I looked at this for a long time this morning.
I'm thinking about how the bird study phase and the Wyeth phase are now starting to synthesize a bit. This painting seems to have a third, unique element that I haven't really seen before.

Thanks for the input, this is a piece that has been conjuring up mixed feelings, mainly because the color theory incorporated in this piece is new to me. Plus its not the most flattering depiction of my grandfather, so people close to him have mixed feelings as well. Anyway, we all have to take risks to progress...
